Applying an ecotourism approach is fundamental for the ecosystem of Huayhuash reserved zone and its local communities. It is important to preserve the Huayhuash ecosystem for future generations, but most importantly to preserve it because its resources are the means of survival for seven Huayhuash local communities. They use their land for agriculture and its pastures for their animals. Water that emanates from the glaciers is use to water their crops and for drinking. They use their lakes and rivers for fishing. Our ecosystem approach is crucial for the preservation of this majestic environment. There are no garbage disposal systems in this area, so the policy of pack it in pack it out has to be taken. Local communities are concerned with the trail conditions. They are organized to maintain and close any trail that is considered dangerous for travelers. Huayhuash communities are also organized to clean up the trails and campsites. We encourage all our travelers to stay on the trails and keep mountain erosion as controlled as possible. Camp fires are not permitted along the Huayhuash circuit, because wood in that area is scarce and locals depend heavily on old wood for their cooking. It is a goal of our company to protect the many treasures in the region, so removing archaeological artifacts is prohibited. Hopeful our ecotours will increase visitors’ appreciation and concern for the important ecological and cultural treasures in this region. At the same time travelers have the opportunity to work directly with Huayhuash locals knowing that they are helping these communities to prosper |
