The community of Llamac is considered one of the principal gateways to the Huayhuash mountain range. Llamac also has a great history and many archaeological attractions. After just a short walk, visitors can appreciate the ancient rock painting of Qara Walanka and the other archaeological treasures in this region. There you can find a perfectly intact piece of ceramic surrounded by many human bones. Another ancient rock painting can be seen after just a 2 hour hike from Llamac. Locals are extremely respectful of their archaeological artifacts; they won’t remove any of their archaeological treasures because they think that the spirit of their ancestors will punish them. These treasures are there for the tourists to enjoy. Another important archaeological site can be found within a 2 hour hike from Llamac. This site named by locals as “Pueblo Viejo” is perfectly well conserved. Watching towers, 2 amphitheaters, food storage rooms and other bigger rooms that were probably used for sleeping are part of this fascinating site. Some parts of the trail are so covered in vegetation that a machete is necessary in order to pass through. Most interesting, this site is not included in any tourist package, so the site it’s practically all for you. Llamac is also the home to the beautiful Lake Jawacocha. From llamac it takes about 6 hours of a moderate hike to get to Lake Jawacocha. This lake is also the last place you visit if you are doing the Huayhuash trek. The complete Huayhuash trek is about 100 miles long and surrounds the Huayhuash mountain range completely. It takes about 10 to 14 days depending on how much you want to visit and how much you want to rest. The departing point is llamac or Pocpa and the trekking involves viewing beautiful snow capped peaks as well as the unique glacier lakes. They posses beautiful colors due to its abundance of minerals. The lakes are teaming with trout, and travelers are more than welcome to fish. We don’t like to set you up with a specific itinerary because we want our travelers to decide what to do and the amount of time that they want to stay at any given place. Depending on how much time you have and on your skill level we will suggest a variety of different options. You are also free to make changes at any given time. We want our travelers to feel completely free and enjoy this majestic environment for as long as they want. Travelers have the opportunity to work and interact with locals, if they wish. The locals feel strongly about this region’s mountains, lakes, animals and plants, and are more than willing to share their knowledge of the area with visitors. |
